After spending a full year having a SLPA do many of my treatments, I can say that I don't feel a SLPA should work without full supervision unless it is in an out patient setting where the reatment plan and goals are consistent from treatment to treatment. A SLPA does not have good coursework knowledge. In fact, they have a brief review of some areas, but no in-depth knowledge of anything. Our field requires problem solving, risk taking potential(dysphagia), a clear picture of 'where' our treatments are going as well as when to switch paths. I have seen some serious abuse of the use of SLPA's that is not only unethical, but not quality service. If we had bigger treatment rooms, a transporter that goes and gets charts, patients, etc. we could supervise the SLPAs. My experience may and will be very different from yours, but none the less makes me feel the SLPA does need direct supervision. That being said, I taught my SLPA so many new things she will admit it was the most informative year of her career. We can teach, set up programs, etc..but this takes hours and hours.
