When will our national organization begin to put pressure on Medicare to allow for SLPAs to work in Long Term Care Facilities; and in all settings without direct supervision. It is extremely frustrating to have such a shortage of SLPs in certain states and then to be placed into a separate category from PT and OT who have many assistants doing much of the work; and in many cases with almost no supervision other than a signature on a piece of paper. Our SLPAs have more education than PTAs and COTAs. Why are we not allowed to utilize our assistants in the same manner? I proposed the use of SLPAs back in 1977. It was not a popular idea at the time. But with the demands of the present day, we certainly need them. Does anyone have any information or insight into this perplexing problem?
