I like working on this skill within movement and preferred activities. In the hallway we hold hands and I walk then say stop or say nothing but stop. I wait until the child turns and looks at me then I say go. This could be just a fleeting look- so be ready. I do this also on the swing, sitting/laying on an exercise ball, etc. The students I do these type of activities are mostly nonverbal or limited verbal. This can be done with ativities they prefer or objects- hold object(my turn)and hold out to child but don't let go until they make contact with you. I have told the reg. classroom teachers in my buildings that if they see me bending down and waiting with a child or twirling in the hallway, I really am working! I try to change it up (my words & actions) so they don't become stuck in a routine.
