Have him produce /l/ with his tongue in between his teeth. This is an interdental /l/ that most kids can do pretty easily and they eventually pull their tongue back as they master the sound. Even if they don't, I think it's an acceptable production with the tongue between the teeth as I catch myself doing that sometimes.
