I love to decorate my therapy room! It is one of my favorite things to do.
As you know we spend a lot of time in our rooms and I believe it should be a place we love coming in to as well as inviting for students.
Last year my theme was outer space. I covered my door with black butcher paper and placed an astronaut, space ship with a LGM (little green man-from Toy Story) in it, stars, planets and moon and my saying was "Good Communication Skills Will Take You Out of this World".
This year I am decorating in a safari/zoo theme. My bulletin board reads "Wild about Communication" the letters are of different animal prints. These can be found at your local teacher store. I have also purchased inspirational posters to display on my walls with zoo/safari animals on them. One is of a zebra laughing and another with a gorilla reading. There are many more too!
I have found pictures of animals from web searches and clip art books, copied them onto a transparency, and then used the overhead projector to trace them onto butcher paper. So far, I have created a lion and a giraffe. I plan to use Eric C.'s medium and use paint and tissue paper to make them more interesting.
I have borrowed many of my kiddos stuffed animals and have purchased small safari themed trinkets from Oriental Trade. I bought small notebooks, pens, pencils, stamps, sunglasses, etc.
I also have this long wall under my windows in which I plan to place my lion with the saying,"No Lion, We have Good Communication Skills/ or speech" and place the students names on some type of dye cut which will be moved along a continuum of which level they are on, ie word, phrase, reading, etc.
Walmart has material with a cute zoo print on it, for curtains. Or grass skirts would be cute too.
Let me know what you come up with, I am always looking for fresh ideas.
Also, google teacher themes. I believe when I did it, I found some ideas.
Check out perikou.com or google therapygames. This is a website in which Dina Peters has created games to use. There is a minimal cost, but most of them are really cute and my students like playing them.
Good Luck!
Lena
