I like the concepts presented in the "Entire World of /R/." It explains that there are many different variations of the production of /R/. The vocalic are is actually made-up of two sounds (the vowel plus the /er/). For example, when producing the /ar/-as in car- you must produce the "ahhh"+ /er/.
/ear/ is "eeeee"+/er/
/ire/ is "I"+ /er/
/air/ is "ehhhh"+ /er/
/rl/ is /er/+ /L/
