I would respectfully disagree with imaslp. I had a student with a significant open bite, and she was indeed able to produce an acoustically correct /s/ and /z/. The tongue needs to rest lightly on the alveolar ridge. Teeth are not truly a necessity, though they do make it much easier by providing some resistance in that area. The problem my student had was with carryover, not with learning to produce the sounds correctly. Her family could not afford orthodontia, she had a low average IQ, and in the long run, it just was too many hurdles to cross for her to be able to make the permanent changes needed. I do agree with imaslp that you might want to wait a bit if she's in the process of orthodontia, until she has a better structure. It will probably make therapy go a lot faster.
