Posted by Ben Roberts Soap operas and everything else on TV that are there just for viewers is called Popular culture. This means anything that is made for profit and marketing I.E pop music and merhandise. This is the opposite of high culture which is things like Ballet and opera which are designed for the portrayal of aestheticness and is usually associated with the arts. Popular culture like soap operas involves instant "gratification" when watched and no intelectual stimulation like high culture. Therefore the gratification of needs model is related to this. Also research the Hypodermic syringe theory which argues that we imitate what we see on TV. Soap opera companies choos very carefully the information they will put in the show so the "Gatekeeping" model by Westley and Mcklean is usefull. hope this helps!!!
