Hello Paul,
It is quite possible that your original surname was misspelt like in an old Parish Register. My own name has been misspelt ie Mr Crimmon instead of McCrimmon! However there are Crimins about, see Web page:--

Your Family may have gone to Canada at the time of the Scottish Clearances.
