McKimmon

My mother's family name is McKimmon. For about five generations McKimmons have lived in Raleigh, North Carolina. For years I have heard that when our ancestors came from Scotland or Northern Ireland to the US, they changed their name from McCrimmon or MacCrimmon to McKimmon. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.
