Posted by wend on 11/28/2005, 10:37 am Ebenezer was a labourer and may have worked on one of many farms in the area where he lived or he could have worked at the local Mill. He died at the young age of 45 in ‘Barcloy Mill’ on the 25th of August 1806. The mill and it’s cottage on the banks of the Mill Burn have gone but the site can still be seen. Ebenezer married Grizel Riddick and she was born in 1759. Grizel came from a very old local Colvend seafaring family. The Riddicks were related to those in the Parish of urr some ten miles to the North-west of Colvend Parish.

Ebenezer Murdoch was born in 1761 and in many documents researchers think he was from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. He and his brother James Murdoch (1763 -1828) sailed down and settled in the Parish of Colvend where they married two sisters from a local sea faring family, the ‘Riddicks’. James married Janet Riddick and they had two children, William born 15th of Feb 1806 and Thomas Lowdon born 21st of May 1809.
There is mention of the Riddicks as witness to an old charter at Terregles, dated January 4th 1488.
Grizel died aged 95 on the 26 of February 1854 and both are buried in Colvend Church yard.
