I am so touched to see so many people with fond memories of may day! It is probably my favorite holiday that I'm am bringing up my girls with too.
And no one in Northern Kentucky knows anything about it. I'm from Oskaloosa, Iowa and that memory of returning to your own back porch to be greeted by 20 little may baskets of every shape and color was truly the most happy feeling I can remember as a child. I've tried to explain it to people as a giving from the heart holiday that can be a lesson to children in creating something yourself and filling it with flowers from your yard. No need to spend money...dig into those drawers and get creative. Use this day to teach your children that happiness is NOT store bought!
For the last 6 years we have delivered about 20 baskets to various friends and family (never getting any in return which is fine) I'm teaching my girls that it's a day for giving and not expecting anything back but a smile. Also, we kind of include a short visit since several of our friend are elderly and enjoy the special treat. We even have a mother that is a nurse at hospital and we've delivered them to her at work and her friends look at them longingly. Our friends actually look forward to the day now for our visit. Not quite the same as in Iowa, but we're putting our own spin on it. We've taken an antique seed pack, scanned it and glued them around cans. Punch two holes in the can, string a 1/2 in ribbon through it and put water, or potting soil and place flowers or a ready to plant snap dragon in them. Last year we did the same can idea but my girls glued old color buttons all over them. Have a great May Day.
