At the Worker's Memorial May Day Festival 2003 in New York, it is also an occasion to engender a strong, enduring voice of resistance made up of artists, poets, musicians, and scholars. The Workers Consort and Workers Edutainment Committee are offering young & emerging performers an opportunity to share their work in the Workers Memorial / May Day Festival 2003. The first venue the May Day Concert, at the historic rally in Union Square on May 1, and the second is at The Variety Show: A Celebration of Artists and Activists at 1199 SEIU, (310 West 43rd Street ), hosted in part by "The Young Progressive Artists Group" on May 10. The May Day Festival in prior years has been held with the larger objective of bringing political & social justice-based arts/media to the mainstream culture, as a conduit to effecting political awareness in a broader audience. At the same time, it is an opportunity to give space to young or emerging performance artists to share their work, building a new generation of progressive culture. Performers are not restricted only to those with labor-related work, and all performance types are welcomed spoken word artists, musicians, theater performers, etc. Student work is welcomed.
