Posted by Thunder Bay I.W.W. on 2/24/2003, 2:09 pm The Thunder Bay Branch of the Industrial Workers of the World (http://www.iww.org) endorses the plans for May Day event(s) and will assist in forming an organizing committee. Thunder Bay I.W.W. encourages other local labour and social justice organizations to endorse this event and to get involved. May Day is the real labour day, check out http://flag.blackened.net/daver/anarchism/mayday.html With the threat of war in the Middle East and increasing conflict and suffering internationally, May Day can be an excellent opportunity to discuss and make the connections between capitalism, exploitation, poverty and war, racism, environmental destruction etc. Also, we can celebrate our victories, learn from each other, understand other global resistance movements.....the sky is the limit! Last years May Day in Thunder Bay included a celebration at the Finlandia Club on Bay St. featuring films, speakers, live music, cold beverages and several information tables set up by local organizations. We also held a May Day march from Bay St. to the Safeways on Court St. where we walked the picket line in solidarity with striking Safeway workers. What is going to happen this year??? It's up to us. Some cities hold May Works fesitivals that include different events all week and/or month. Check out http://www.mayweek.ab.ca to see what other cities are doing. Some ideas for May Day: May Day celebration (music, poetry, spoken word, food, beer), film screenings, strike for the 4 hour day, pot luck dinners, May Day soccer or street hockey, march or demonstration, workshops/skill sharing, Thunder Bay social forum?, April 28th is the day of mourning for workers killed or injured on the job, picnics, panel discussion/community dialogue, Propagandhi and Noam Chomsky (hehehe), street party, general strikes, bookfair, Pagan Beltane celebrations (if that's your cup of tea), critical mass, legalize it, May 5th is Cinco de Mayo an excellent day to discuss Latin American resistance movements, revolution??, street theatre, solidarity with Grassy Narrows, May Day mural with local artists, ICTFU has announced global union mobalizations for May Day around the theme of respect http://thunderbay.indymedia.org/news/2003/02/3948.php (is your union affiliated to the ICTFU?
