I have made May Day baskets all my life and am 53 years old. I still make them each year and give them to friends. You can make them out of construction paper, or poster board. You can make them square or cone shaped. I just finished making one. I make a pattern by folding a regularpiece of 8 by 11 paper. Turn paper sideways, bring right bottom corner and fold. Cut extra paper on left end off and you will see the cone shape. Staple bottom of cone and top. That is an old fashioned may basket. Then Attach a loop at the top point of the cone. On the one I just made I covered the cone with fabric, then put lace around the cone top, and then added ribbon. You can do so many different things with it. If you prefer not to have a single loop you may cut the pattern of the cone to be round and use ribbon like a basket holder across it. Lots of potential. I make a mixture of Popcorn, peanuts, and gum drops to put inside the basket. I also put a little sprig of fresh flowers, daisy or jonquil, tulip or whatever. You can see there are lots of possibilities. Happy crafting!
