Before May Day was designated as a day of solidarity for workers, it was a pre christian holiday celebrated all over Europe. It honored the start of spring, and Maia, the goddess for which May is named among other things. look it up on Google.com, I found lots of interesting info, the first of which was directed at teaching children.
