when i was a child in the 50's we celibrated may day with may baskets. we made them out of dixie cups with a pipe cleaner handle. each basket had a piece of candy and a bunch of violets. we would take the may baskets to our friends homes and leave them on the porch, knock and run. I dont remeber the why of this but I do know that it isnt done in my little home town anymore.
