The only thing that makes me say, 'COULD' is possibility (liklyhood) that the engine is higher than the output, which means water would have to be DRIVEN up the exhast to reach the engine, not likly to happen. I would think you are correct. Or atleast put some form of a one way valve that would withstand the heat. Depending on the application one could just reroute the exhaust out the back end, this would be ideal for a speed only boat that would be off for the occasional swim. Not useful for sports or fishing.
