Old town of Loutro and volcano eruption ?

Two weeks ago, I spent two happy days in Loutro. Walking westward near by modern town of Loutro, I discovered the remains of an old large destroyed town and of a volcano, in the middle of the ruins, near by the sea. The volcano eruption seems to be the origin of this disaster. All guides I can read are mute about this. Can you give me some information about these facts, or tell me where I can find it? How many people were living in this town? At what date does the disaster occur? Could people go away safe in time? Thank you very much for your help. Michel.
