I was so sorry to read this message. We were in Loutro at the time and heard of your misfortune. Clearly everyone in the area awas shocked for us to have heard about it. I can understand your reaction
and am also sad that wherever you are in the world there is always someone who will do this kind of thing eventually. I live in a small Devon town and become used to a very low crime rate but every now and then we are 'brought up short' by one of these interlopers. At least if the perpetrator is a known suspect he will not be able to repeat this crime in such a small place. The people of Loutro were clearly shocked and disgusted on your behalf - residents and visitors.
We experienced both police apathy and incredible local support whilst in Loutro, when my son and friend got themselves lost in Aradena Gorge. They had alerted police from their own phone, but the owner at the Ilios restaurant got his son to transport my husband and our other friend out to Sfakia instantly. His son suggested the most sensible plan of the day to recover the two of them and a Frenchman and his son followed this and organised the actual rescue. The policeman was not at all brilliant - no that's too kind - he was no help! but then again neither are many of our own in England, human nature being as variable as it is! In an area that size it was probably the same chap as yours!
Loutro is a discovery for me and I intend to go back for a month next year. I am really sorry for you that treasured memories have been ruined by this theiving plonker. I don't think it is a sign of deterioration, 'scum' like behaviour is endemic to human nature and it seems to me that small places are a microcosm of the world whether we will or no. I will take on your experience as a warning and reminder of this. You, I believe, have been tragically unlucky. In the meantime I am hoping that Loutro retains its tranquility and friendliness for many years to come. Best wishes to you and your family.
: On 19th July I had a wallet stolen from the back of my chair in a
: restaurant in Loutro. It had passports, return air tickets,
: credit cards and a fair amount of cash. Partly my fault for
: having so much in one place but I was dismayed that this lovely
: place had been invaded by the scum one finds in other parts of
: the world. And the doubly sad thing was that the perpertrator is
: thought to be a Greek from another part of Crete - known to
: locals but no firm evidence could be placed against him. The
: wallet was found over at Finix the next day minus the money but
: we got everything else back - thank heavens. The local police -
: when we finally tracked them down in Komitades (a place which
: bizarrely has phones which only work intermittently - pretty
: hopeless in a real emergency!) - treated us like dirt and left my
: wife and two daughters to walk 3 miles back to Sfakia.
: Fortunately one of the dark Sfakiots kindly drove us back to the
: ferry. It spoiled a long lovely memory I have had of Loutro
: lasting some 15 years. I don't think I will want to come back.
: Sorry. My best wishes to all those lovely people who I have seen
: growing and changing over the years. I hope you can keep the scum
: from the door but you need more support from your police.
