On 19th July I had a wallet stolen from the back of my chair in a restaurant in Loutro. It had passports, return air tickets, credit cards and a fair amount of cash. Partly my fault for having so much in one place but I was dismayed that this lovely place had been invaded by the scum one finds in other parts of the world. And the doubly sad thing was that the perpertrator is thought to be a Greek from another part of Crete - known to locals but no firm evidence could be placed against him. The wallet was found over at Finix the next day minus the money but we got everything else back - thank heavens. The local police - when we finally tracked them down in Komitades (a place which bizarrely has phones which only work intermittently - pretty hopeless in a real emergency!) - treated us like dirt and left my wife and two daughters to walk 3 miles back to Sfakia. Fortunately one of the dark Sfakiots kindly drove us back to the ferry. It spoiled a long lovely memory I have had of Loutro lasting some 15 years. I don't think I will want to come back. Sorry. My best wishes to all those lovely people who I have seen growing and changing over the years. I hope you can keep the scum from the door but you need more support from your police.
