Posted by Derek Brear on April 27, 2003, 6:39 pm, in reply to "Walking in Sfakia/Loutro" From Loutro you can walk up to Livaniana or Anapoli (not as scary as it looks from below). The coastal path is quite challenging in places - there are several places between Loutro and Chora Sfakion where you will have to scramble. Heading west from Loutro the path is very easy until you get to Likkos after which the scrambling starts again. If you like to get away from civilisation, Gavdos is worth a trip. From Frangokastello, there is a nice walk up the Kallikratiano Gorge and, if you have a car, there are nice walks to the north west.

I would recommend Frangokastello or Chora Sfakion as a base. In May there should be plenty of accommodation available. Loutro is nicer in itself but the fact that there is no road transport from it can be limiting. The Imbros Gorge is far less crowded than the Samaria and a lot easier. You can get a taxi to the top and walk down or you can walk up and then back down. Decent footwear is essential for any of the more challenging walk and we found Leki sticks very useful on the loose stuff.
