As an SLP, I feel very strongly that phonemic awareness should be taught to all students, beginning in kindergarten, with listening and attention skills practiced even in preschool. I did PA intervention with at-risk elem. students and proved with data that the training benefitted these students. Big problems in the field, though -- (1) lack of awareness that SLPs have this knowledge and skill, so are a greatly underutilized resource, (2) SLP caseloads are so large that they are not looking to do additional intervention, and (3) districts don't have the $$ to hire additional SLPs for this intervention and manageable caseloads, What a waste!
