There are a lot of books in bookstores that are lower level books, but deal with topics that are appropriate for older kids. They are geared to elementary school kids that are learning to read and they usually come in different steps or levels. For example, I have one that is "Bears:Life in the Wild." It's simple language, but it deals with bears in a mature fashion. I don't know a specific series by name, but I don know that there is a section of these learning to read non-fiction books in bookstores.
