I really feel we must bombard the kids with hearing rhyming first. I read lots of nursery rhymes and any rhyming books that fit with the age. I have a set of books (don't know where I got them, sorry) that are illustrated beautifully...and they are the simple songs like "The Cow Jumped Over the Moon," and "Itsy Bitsy Spider" so the kids can see the song/story in pictures, we sing the many verses that tell the song/story. Then I go through and leave out a word that can be rhymed...then we make a list of all the rhyming word pairs we hear.Hope that helps.
