Bring in the packaging from foods/snacks/household products like Zest, Crest, Lay's, RingDing, Tide, Mrs. Dash, Take Five, gum, vegetable Oil, Colgate, etc. Use the product names to work on sound manipulation/segmentation/rhyming. Make a word wall with the picture of the product at the top and have the students sound out words that are made with the same sounds. Make up poems using the words, or write a story/song. Lots of ideas could spring forth. Kids could have a shopping cart made from a file folder and the Boardmaker picture of the grocery cart on the front.
Make connections to classroom phonics lessons and vocab.
Flashlight sound works - Darken the room (not completely) Say a word and give the students a flashlight to shine on things in the room that start with the same sounds, or rhyme, or have the same number of syllables, etc. Or have them segment the sounds and match them to the letters by finding those letters around the room with their flashlights.
