I'd recommend a subscription to News-2-You! This downloadable newspaper has 3 different reading levels and many pages of follow-up activities for reading, writing, math, social studies, etc. Great stuff, and the ways to expand the themes of the newspaper are endless. I've used this as an entire curriculum. Find a sample and more info at www.news-2-you.com. Also check out Print 'n Play Community Units from Mayer-Johnson -- lots of activities related to the community that would age-appropriate.
