How to begin phonemic awareness in a child with auditory processing concerns

Hello all, I'm working with a kindergartener who has difficulty identifying rhyming words and also repeating sentences. He has attention issues so getting him to sit still is sometimes a challenge. What is a good way to go about introducing phonemic awareness? I was thinking very basic imitations, Simon Says style: clap hands once, clap hands twice, then animal sounds...I'm not quite sure how to get to rhyming words stage though. Thanks for any help.
