I often work on phonemic awareness activities since research is showing such a link between kids with phonological disorders having a difficult time learning phonemic awareness and therefore having a difficult time learning to read. So a starting point may just be working on phonemic awareness activities with your K-2 students that are showing deficits in this area. It isn't too hard to incorporate phonemic/phonological awareness activities into your regular artic or language activities. I learn more about specific topics by choosing my continuing eduction classes to reflect what I feel I need to know more about!:) Hope this helps.

It sounds like your school has a great reading support structure, so obviously you wouldn't be expected to do a ton of reading instruction, but not all schools have the same situation. (Some may have one reading specialist for the entire district or for several schools and that is really when the SLP might need to take a larger role in the "reading realm.")
