I would target a lot of pragmatic skills. (i.e. turn taking in conversation, using a peers name to initiate conversation, asking and answering questions appropriately with peers, eye contact, good listening skills etc. You can also work on following directions by having them play barrier games with one another. They each have to tell each other where to put objects (i.e. under, in, on, etc) and the other kids have to follow. This helps them expressively and receptively follow directions. I feel the social piece is one of the bigger areas of deficit with these children with autism. I would only work on phonological awareness if necessary.
