I have a seventh grade boy on my caseload who is deaf and uses a combination of signs and gestures to communciate. Cognitively he is fine, but he is only just beginning to read/write at a first grade level. One of his goals is to form simple sentences using the correct sentence structure. I'm having trouble getting him to write at all, even using what he enjoys talking about. (He is interested in pokemon video games, dragons, wrestling, and the Alien movies.) I can't seem to get him to understand that if he learns to read, spell, or write people will be able to understand him better. Any suggestions for activities that might help?
