E) This is the 50th Birthday of the polo field. As I remember, we laid out the field, graded, leveled and seeded it in the spring /early summer of 1956 and started playing that fall. We will have a party to honor the event (details to follow at a later date). The first tournament was the Jess Mc Millan Memorial Tournament in 1957. Jess was a teammate of my Dad and Willis Allen in the 30's and early 40's, before WWII.
The reason there is a polo field on the Hering Ranch is due to those mentioned in E) above. Those gentlemen were amateur polo players and they loved the game that way. The field is not a commercial venture. The dues (barely) cover expenses for watering and mowing the field and for replacement boards, paint, seed, fertilizer, etc. We rely on volunteer labor for painting and replacing the boards, filling divots, and all the other things that need to be done to make the field playable. I count on, and appreciate, your help to keep the legacy going.
