Yeah I'm lucky enough to have attended all 5 harvests for the past four years or so, which is something I'm extremely grateful for.
All of the ponds have concrete steps down but I know the one you mean, that pond is the one most gaijin get invited to, I guess because it is part of the nearest and easiest to access complex, and also has some of the largest fish so it is most impressive.
Interestingly the only gaijin this year at any of the harvests were Mark and myself, plus Sana, a female photographer representing a chinese magazine. It made the after harvest party quite interesting as there was only us to "pick on" as all the breeders wandered around with bottles of beer and jugs of Sake to top up glasses, playing their favourite "get the foreigner as drunk as possible" game. They won, big time !!!.
There seems to be a few changes in who attends the harvests to help out each year but the usual faces include Shintaro, Marasada, Hiroi Seiji, Yamamatsu, Nogami, Torazo, Murata, Dainichi etc, and many bring their staff along. Certainly makes for impressive watching as they all get stuck in, and I guess its the only place you get to see so many Masters at work together.
As an aside note going back to where this conversation started about paddle wheels etc, Toshikatsu came down to Nomoles a week or two ago to have a few beers with Matt Corino and myself, and we got talking about this exact same subject. He was explaining about how many of the mudponds now have electricity, and using paddle wheel aeration has become the norm. The downside to this is the many many poles and power cables which now litter the landscape.
