In ZNA we teach fundamentals first---
Nishikigoi are created in two fundamental skin types ( white and black). In western terms this means that koi are of two basic mutations- hyper melanistic and leucistic.
Lesson two is each of these skin mutations ( and variations of those two mutations) also carry one of four pattern types-
1) solid ( no pattern)
2) dorsal
3) wrapped
4) lateral pattern
Now I'd like to introduce another level for the advanced student of Nishikigoi.
We have discussed 'atmosphere' that is expressed by certain individuals. But there is also an atmosphere associated with certain phenotypes. And these atmospheres can make a koi of a more primitive nature and therefore less evolved ( and less valuable) than other phenotypes.
The most recognizable phenotype of primitive atmosphere is of course karasu goi. Often people will say that a fish looks 'kawari like'. What they often mean is that the fish is of a karasu goi or primitive goshikigoi lineage.
Of even a more sophisticated level of koi appreciation the advanced student and serious judge will see primitive atmosphere in gosanke lines. These can be looked at as traits ( such as menkaburi - red face) or in a more insightful observation- in pattern itself. For instance, Inazuma pattern is a primitive pattern that, if accompanied with menkaburi-gives the fish a primitive look or atmosphere. Burn orange beni on a gosanke will also give this effect.
Finally, aka sanke is an example of a primitive atmosphere that reduces the show value of a fish when competing with say three step sabkes of equal quality.
Take some time to develop your eye regarding refined and primitive atmosphere of fish, next time you attend a koi show. Sunday morning judge revive is a perfect time to have a trained judge show you first hand the difference in refined/primitive atmosphere of fish. It will be difficult to see at first. But after some exposure to the concept the clouds will part and and you will se ethis difference clearly.
