right. so there are really three things going on;
1) the intact nature of the waste material with gravity being a much more gentle transfer. straining causing content and fines to be released into circulation.
2) the temperature and bacteria count dtermining the rate of breakdown and additional ammonia production resulting in HIGHER nitrAte levels over time.
3) the easy of a sump flush vs backwashing of a BB ( d's point of "if it's easy you do the maintenance and if it's an ordeal you tend to put it off). Sumps flushed daily or put on a timer that dumps the 'heavy water' in the lower 1/3 of the sump with an auto refill taking care of the level automatically. Or a semi open trickle tp replace flushed water.
