Ya know, I do not disagree with anything JR or Brady said....in a limited context. The problem is that those viewpoints are i fact "limited."
Yes, a pump will puree solids before sending them to a bead filter....but opnly if they are large to begin with. I think sight has been lost on the prefiltering of the solids prior to the pump itself.
Another factor not considered in the other view point are those solids that are bouyant enough not to settle. Little discussion has been added as to how to seperate them for removal from the pond system other than through a bead filter (for those that are small enough that would still would pass through a screen seperation system.
While bead filters are notorious for high head pressures and thus higher operating costs per gollon actually pumped, two inovations have occured that greatly reduce this drawback. The use of less trapping styles of media (such as k1) and the bypassing of the multiport valve (GCTEK) for normal operating conditions.
Now, someone will have to explain to me how a gravity fed system consisting of something such as a skimmer to Sieve to bead filter utilizing a multiport bypass and cleaned regularly (on the same schedule as let's say a settlement chamber) has any of the same drawbacks mentioned. Keep in mind that the settlement chamber will have a far greatler organic load than the bead filter as mentioned. I'm not talking about the biofiltration of a bead as a stand alone either...simply fines removal. So far, in what seems like 3 endless threads, I simply am not seeing it not have I experienced any downside to this style of installation in almost ten years.
