What we have to take in to account is water 'pressure' too when comparing these two systems. Obviously any time our pond water is pressurized and forced through a media, such as beads, small particulate waste is further squished and broken up, and puree'd into the water column,... a little like squeezing or straining juice from grapes, but on a more microscopic level,... becoming a near invisible contaminant and fuel source for producing ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and feeding pea soup,... which has to be zapped by UV units. A vicious cycle.
Gravity fed systems, on the other hand,... in addition to the positive oxygenation and bio-filtration mentioned, do a much better job of keeping the clumps of waste in clumps and out of the pond system BEFORE any point of water pressure (the pump). With most bead system, the pump comes before the beads, where it puree's waste, and sends it pressurized through the beads, further breaking waste into microscopic 'pieces'. Even bead systems that are connected to skimmer circuits are puree'ing dead algae and other waste in the water column.
I'm not saying this is all tragic, BUT when we look at the mechanics of both systems, gravity fed systems are much more efficient across the board.
Best Wishes,
Brady Brandwood
