JR: If the bead filter is preceded by mechanical filtration that captures the larger particulates, do you think it differs from a mat chamber preceded by an effective settlement chamber?

I am thinking both capture fines and both provide the base for nitrification, with the difference being frequency of cleaning necessary for maintenance and the impact of backwashing on the biofilm.
