So what's better?? Because koi ponds are ;
1) closed systems
2) progressively changing systems. This is a different concept compared to the point#1 ( closed system). Progressively changing ( in the case of koi ponds- progressive eutrophication). In this case the 'pollution' associated with closed systems is highly organic in nature and represents seasonal change as a contributor to pollution rate.
In general, all filter designs that are separated in terms of mechanical and biological are better than ones that combine the two functions
secondly, all systems that are open to the atmosphere are better than systems that are not.This is because the break down of organics uses oxygen and also produce volatile nitrogenous gases as part of both decay and oxidation.
Thirdly, that class of filters that are self clearing and tend to resist biofouling are superior to those that progress from low performance to high performance and then back to low performance. This is the concept of long term vs short term filter designs. Once a filter has to be cleaned you tend to loose peaknitrification for a day or so. Others tend to mold the biofilm to the water sheer and remain undisturbed, making for a sturdy biofilm.
