JR, let me give you and example
Was called to a large pond that was built about 10 years ago, rectangular, 4-4.5 feet deep. It had two large pumps in the pond that constantly were getting plugged up with debris. The pumps took water to a UV, then to three upflow 100 gallon tanks filled with a dense filter media. The water was never clear enough to see the fish, much less the bottom. The UV, while sized for the pond was not able to keep up with the biological load that was keeping the pond green.
The pond owner spent 4-6 hours each weekend cleaning out the filters in the 100 gallon tanks, which the first would begin to bypass the plugged up materiel by monday. Actually what I meant by quit flowing through the media. Instead it would go around.
WE retro fitted 6 bottom drains, installed a settlement chamber for the solids, installed a bead filter and two pumps for the flow he wanted.
We also replaced the media in the upflow tanks with matalla matting.
The pond went clear within a few days, and has remained that way for the last three years. Regular water changes occur when he backwashes. The upflow tanks have yet to clog, and have not been removed or cleaned in those three years. Growth of the fish has been astronomical, as most fish have more than doubled their size, and he is overstocked.
While not the way I would want to have my pond, without totally revamping his pond, it at least is presentable, and a much better living environment for the Koi.
