well, I think I've beat this one to death so I'd just ask you to reread the points I tried to make in all the responses below( see the response to Lee A)
The shells should be in an open TT type design so that mechanical as well as biological breaks the shell down. They are self cleaning in that application.
And water changes or semi-open design always dilutes and reduces fines and all pollutants in a system that doesn't attempt to remove them.
One thing that you wrote caused me pause. And that is, " Matting also catches fines----many people put it off till the water quits flowing". How does the water QUIT flowing?? I'm confused-
