Very good Brett and I would also like to address JR's comments on "exercise." We have all seen fat koi and well structured, muscular koi. Why the difference? Simple, ammount of exercise for a given caloric intake. Mud ponds offer a natural version of this equation with large water vaolumes, depth (add n rooting aroundin the mud) and an almost limited amount of natural food. As stated previously, a back yard recirculating system does not have these variables but the outcomes can be replicated and pond design and currents can be an intragal part of this replication process. The rest should be easy to understand....I would hope?
