well, I'm not talking about 'likes' and 'dislikes' of fish---
This whacky idea that koi need to exercised as race horses in pools or weight lifers at the Gym is faulty. If you observe koi in field ponds and earthen dams they move as a school and forage hours at a time, several times in a 24 hour period. That is plenty of 'exercise'. As evidenced by the body and luster of koi harvested from those tranquil mudpond settings.
This subject is beginning to drift so to re-establish the point, overflow is about dilution- or the turning of a closed system into a semi-open system. You often hear the word 'trickle' used when discussing semi-open techniques.
Current is the swift movement of water. Steve points out that it is a help aid for organic material/mulm movement. I agree. The excerise thing is a tad whacky but not ridiculous.
But Mudponds in Japan are exceptional environments for koi growth and development and they employ no real current. They might and do employ overflow and also techniques to move water at the surface or to the surface. But the method has no desire to 'stir up' organics! Or deliver those organics any where- remote to the pond. In effect ( and Brett knows this better than any one) in warm weather it is wise to assist gas exchange as mudpond floors are active consumers of oxygen as is algae. - JR
