Yea know, I often get stunned like a deer in oncoming head lights when I'm hit with the notion that folks think the truth about biology or science in general is a matter of opinion!
Hobbyist A likes BBs because they own one
Hobbyist B dislikes BBs because he doesn't own one!
BBs are trapping. Who says so? The manfacturer and designer of the BB. What proof is there-- besides the VERY FACT that the unit HAS a pressure gauge, the pressure gauge rises with time.
BBS or any closed system is a nitrogenous waste sink. Who says that? ANYONE who has taken biology 101 and studied the various cycles of nature and decay.
BBs all clog over time. If they don't they become manufacturers of nitrate. Add gravel to the pond base and that also becomes a generator of nitrate. This is not good for koi. They can live fine. It is not a healthy environment however. If you live in the north, BBs are really bad as biological activity cuts back.
You can NOT clean a BB to counter this unless you dismantle it. The koi pop culture is replete with stories of caked beads, yellow beads, Mulm collection ( even after flushing). Again not the end of the world just a weak link in the system.
Current in the pond. I'm still looking for currents in a mud pond. No luck yet. I'll keep looking. The cyclonic chat found an audience in 1999. Today, TTs and turnover rates are more effective and efficient. Water movement is keep for gas exchange but 90% of that exchange is at the surface in the skin layer of water. NOTHING works better for this than a TT. And forget the bent koi stuff-- don't make me post the banana picture again!
