After going down all the above mentioned paths with the show koi and hauling truckloads to shows, how many trophys did I need? Enough! It was not fun anymore for me and certainly not fun for them. They were going over the hill as show koi anyway. Do you all know what I did? I let them all go free in my wild mudpond for the rest of their lives. They get to roll in the mud and eat snails. After the past several years a few weeks ago I needed a few small koi to keep mosquitos down in 350 gallon stock watering tanks so I bought a handful of tosai from Petsmart. Do you know what? I see again with the eyes of a child. We see koi in a delighted way like that at first, but then we learn to be judgemental. We seek a perfect koi that will turn off that function and relieve us of that stress and return us to the childliKe state of paradise lost. Now I find I have become that way again. No judgement, no critical eye, no playing If Only, just the simple childlike delight of shiro bekko, yamabuki, a sky blue little shusui and a little tancho with red hands and hi running off on the gillplates. It looks like a sports car and also has kutchibeni. Its been a long difficult expensive road full circle to get back to that simple happy place.
