Sanjiv's story reminds me of a similar situation.
It was many years ago, '01 I believe. The annual AKCA Seminar was in Houston. I, having been asked to set up the judge's seminar, did so around the corner from my farm in Danbury at the county commissioner's home.
Toshio Sakai was our teacher that day. I had set up five vats with mature koi for study. All of the koi with the exception of one specimen were from my breeding stock and were Japanese koi.
Upon seeing the one specimen, a three year old kohaku, Mr. Sakai mentioned that he was very surprised that such a koi was outside of Japan. That many such koi were in Japan, but seldom had he ever seen one such anywhere else.
When he learned that this koi was the only one not bred in Japan, and in fact had been bred right there in Danbury, he was very excited and very pleased.
Now I got a room full of trophies given me by fish collector's when they won a prize with one of my fish. Not a one means as much to me as those comments did that day.
Until you've really, really worked at it, spent untold sums of money, and experienced heartache second only to that induced by humankind, as well as experienced higher highs no drug could induce,
you can in no way understand an inkling of what goes through the heart, mind and soul of a koi breeder.
The thrill of seeing a koi you bred that pleases YOU, it is among the greatest of thrills. Comparable in ways to seeing your child succeed at extreme difficulty or perhaps hooking the largest fish in the bay.
It is for that thrill, I know, that koi breeders do what they do. Receiving money is a far distant second.
