I'll certainly take your advice on where to shop in Japan. This is a big next step for me and I do expect to be have a "welcome to the next level" moment. BTW I hope you continue to stay out of hibernation so we can all learn from your posts.

Let me share a true story with you to reinforce my support for domestic breeders. I live out on the West Coast (San Jose, CA). There are 4 major dealers and three Koi clubs within 30 miles. So considerable volume of Japanese Koi flows through here and consistently wins shows all over the US. Agreed not "Japan show" quality but likely some of the best Koi imported into the US.

I had a bunch of my ZNA club friends (including two judges)over to my place while I was teaching a wet lab. These are the guys who go to all weekend seminars every time Toshio Sakai is in town. In my pond was a new Sansai Kohaku and everyone tried to guess which Japanese breeder it originated from. Every major Japanese breeder's name was rattled off in the next five minutes. In the end I surprised them when they learned it was a domestic Koi that I had purchased from Brady :-)
