Just getting back after a weekend away and you all made nice already
LOL.. Jk....a little..
You all know I don't like to mix it up like some do, and if nothing good to say try not to say much at all. And...I agree with most of what has been said ie: poor pix, hard to tell what's definitively what, etc. Also, not really fair to judge a picture. I think JR and others put it succinctly about judging the best mature Domestic and Japanese in this country... currently still not much of a contest. Go to Japan, and the number of koi that can easily beat these best Domestics are many. Not cheap. But many of them. Been there, and have seen that many times.
I do believe that domestic breeders are closing the gap, as has been said. Can they catch up? Not likely IMHO, but they are producing nicer and nicer koi then were being produced years ago. No question about that. One that is marketable to the great majority of the world's koi keepers. My hat is off to all the domestic breeders (hard work, and I couldn't do it)and I do support them in any way I can. I like these guys and believe in what they are trying to accomplish. Consequently, I buy a smaller (Tosai or Nisai) domestic koi or two every year just to see what is happening with them. We bought a Domestic Sansai koi on one occasion. Same ages of Japanese koi we primarily buy. They get equal care and chance to make the big pond as any other purchase. Many things go into that decision, but the big pond is always home to our "best" 15 koi. This past year 3 Japanese tosai made the cut for the big pond (which also meant I removed 3 koi from that pond), and no domestics did. It is on this experience, and what I have had the pleasure to see in 6 trips to Japan and at many Koi shows that I based my statements on. I have not had the pleasure of owning a Purdin Koi as of yet though.
Younger koi, and especially tosai I think are hard to tell much about from pix unless they are really crappy. It is fairly easy to pick these koi apart from the picture, but I do wonder if at least some of what I see might also be the picture? Put em in a bowl side by side and/or at a show and happy to talk.
Best Regards,
Bob Winkler
