Sanjiv,
You are absolutely, 100% correct that some of the best Domestic Koi Breeder's are an indispensable part of the hobby for many reasons, to include all of the ones you mentioned as are the Koi Dealers. Koi Shows would most likely be non existent without these people. Once again, I can name the ones in my opinion who fall into that category without worry of any repercussions. Scott Purdim, Matt at Quality Koi, Mark Bodycott at USA Koi, Brett Rowley and even someone who I've butted heads with many times, Brady Brandwood of Lotus Land Koi. Again, I'm sure they're others that I'm just not aware of, to include your guy who sounds very competent. My beef was very specific and that particular group of fish posted on Koi Shack, specifically the one step Kohaku's that got some people goo goo gah gah. I'm just asking them to tell me what I'm obviously missing?
The flip side of these good Domestic Breeders and Dealer's is the proliferation of the "back yard koi dealers" popping up almost weekly. There's some 15 or 16 year old kid who is a Koi Dealer and already has a website! How scary is that? Now you'd never see these guy's here on NI, Bito, or Koi Shack hawking there shite because they know they'd get spanked and it wouldn't be a pleasant experience. Some of these guys don't even have a pond, they're selling Koi out of $100 aluminum horse trough's. I couldn't make this stuff up if I wanted to.
Sanjiv, I want you to remember me when you finally make that trip to Japan for the first time. Just to mention a few but try to stop by Sakai of Isawa, his brother Toshiyuki Sakai of Yamamatsu Koi Farm in Yamakoshi, one of my all time favorites, Igarashi Kazuto also in Yamakoshi, Mitsuo Hasegawa in Ojiya and Tsuyoshi Kawakami (Torazo) in Uragara village. You'll walk into their green house and the quality and quantity of Koi will be blinding and simply take your breath away. You'll then say, maybe that guy Tom Lansing was right after all?
As Nancy Morales succinctly points out, who's also the owner along with her husband Frank of some of the very best Koi here in the U.S., you'll be seeing less and less of these quality Koi here at the shows in the U.S. You'll have to go to Japan because Koi Dealers just can't bring that class of Koi into the U.S. on the "hope" of selling it.
Best,
Tom Lansing
