Larry, I was sent several PM's from people I respect pointing out another reason the Judges are reluctant to speak completely freely but it has more to do with a certain individual who'll remain anonymous, no pun intended. I understand he has a red phone (Hot Line) sitting in his closet desk where he spends most of his time, with a direct line to the powers at AKCA. Not that they listen to anything he has to say as they simply consider the source. Therefore, I'll retract my challenge for them (Judges) to make comments for the reason you gave as well as what I said above.
I put Scott Purdin at the top of the U.S. Koi Breeder's and maybe those pictures that were posted over on Koi Shack were not his best Tosai, particularly the one step Kohaku's. I'll reassess final judgement on the couple of Yondan Kohaku's for another year or two. It just rubs me the wrong way when I hear these hacks constantly make that statement about U.S. Breeder's catching up to the Japanese breeder's. Mind you, it doesn't happen here on NI and now that I think about it, I seem to only read it where the true knowledge base is for all things Koi - "The Land of the Dark Lord."
For all the reason's JR pointed out, it's an impossibility for the U.S. Breeder's to ever catch the Japanese. The Oyagoi they have to choose from is never ending. They have the money and water (space) to experiment. For those that may not know, Oyagoi in Japan can go for hundreds and I do mean hundreds of thousands of dollars, some approaching 7 figures. What U.S. Koi Breeder can compete with that?
The improvements the U.S. Breeder's have made the past 10 years is impressive and they do well in sizes 1 through 4 and every once in a while they break through to size 5 and 6 but that's simply an anomaly due to what was brought to the show that day. It's not a consistent happening.
Best,
Tom Lansing
